When people talk about supporting Kenyan musicians, the conversation usually focuses on streaming, ticket sales, or social media follows. These matter — but MEMA believes that the most meaningful support is structural. That is why one of the platform's flagship initiatives is the MEMA Music Sacco: a savings and credit cooperative designed specifically for Kenya's music community.

What Is a Sacco?

A Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (Sacco) is a member-owned financial institution that pools contributions from its members to provide savings accounts, loans, and other financial services. Saccos have been a cornerstone of Kenya's financial system for decades, providing affordable financial services to communities that traditional banks often underserve.

The MEMA Music Sacco applies this proven model to the unique realities of the music industry — building a financial home for artists, producers, engineers, managers, and all the professionals who make Kenya's music ecosystem run.

Why Do Musicians Need Their Own Sacco?

The music industry's financial reality is unlike most other professions. Income is irregular and often unpredictable. A successful concert or viral hit can generate significant revenue — but the months between peaks can be lean. Traditional banks, with their rigid income verification requirements and standard loan products, are poorly equipped to serve this reality.

Musicians also face specific financial needs that generic financial products don't address: equipment purchases, studio time, music video production, international travel for performances, and the costs of building and maintaining a professional music career. The MEMA Music Sacco will offer products designed around these realities.

What Will the Sacco Offer?

The MEMA Music Sacco is being developed to offer a range of services to its members, including:

  • Savings accounts tailored to irregular income patterns, allowing members to build financial reserves during high-earning periods.
  • Development loans to fund career investments — equipment, recording, distribution, marketing, and more.
  • Emergency credit for musicians facing unexpected financial hardship.
  • Financial literacy programmes to help members build long-term financial skills.
  • Group investments where member contributions fund shared assets that benefit the community.

Who Can Join?

The MEMA Music Sacco is open to anyone working professionally in Kenya's music industry — artists, producers, sound engineers, music managers, event promoters, music journalists, music educators, and all other music professionals. Membership will be formalised through a simple registration process linked to MEMA's platform.

The Bigger Vision

The Music Sacco is part of MEMA's broader mission to build infrastructure for a sustainable Kenyan music industry. Alongside healthcare access, mentorship programmes, and the awards platform, the Sacco represents MEMA's commitment to the long-term wellbeing of every person who dedicates their life to music in Kenya.

Great music requires great artists. Great artists require the foundation to build sustainable lives. That is what the MEMA Music Sacco is being built to provide.
